Focal Point Gallery is pleased to present ‘Theatre’, a newly commissioned work by British artist Hilary Lloyd. Shot in the Palace Theatre in Westcliff-on-Sea, Lloyd worked with a group of actors and non-actors to produce a series of films of people and dogs acting out a script written by the artist.

Theatre in Gallery 1 and the Window Gallery comprises a series of constructed spaces and layered projections that examine the interplay between the honed theatrics of acting, and the immaterial conditions of seeing and being seen. This collection of projected scenes, like in the theatre, map the architecture of the gallery, spilling on to the extremities of the space, whilst the visible presence of technology creates a physical dimension to the act of looking. In this space, Lloyd places the viewer within an equivalent staged experience, mediated by codes of posture and desire.

Lloyd uses a series of holes in the main gallery wall to allow light from a theatre rig, installed in the window space behind, to punctuate the space and further layer the manifestations on the opposite wall. This creates a series of light shafts spanning the space, which are simultaneously interrupted by the viewer.

In Gallery 2, Lloyd invited children from FPG’s Young Artist Club to freely paint the walls, into which Lloyd has embellished fabric and gold leaf to the design. Titled Opera, this work includes a video of magazine pages and drawings punctuated by circular trasitions, accopanyied by a disco ball.

Outside the gallery on Big Screen Southend, Lloyd presents Road Movie, a film that shows an urban space in constant motion, seen from within a moving vehicle. Designed to draw attention the monolithic building structure that houses the screen, again the viewer is invited to consider the physical space they inhabit.
