• Maximum Overdrive Takeover
    Thomas Lock
  • 2 September 2017, 6.00pm
  • Focal Point Gallery

Thomas Lock presents a live score with musicians Manuela Barczewski and Rudi Schmidt to accompany new video works viewable across multiple screens within the gallery and Elmer Square.

An additional performance will also take place with sound artist Tom Richards in response to the video works by Lock. Richards has built his own idiosyncratic modular electronic music system, with which he creates slowly evolving and heavily textured polyrhythmic improvisations. His individual approach and reductive palette lead to a taught, rhythmically focused sonic experience. He has performed and exhibited widely in the UK, as well as internationally in the US, Germany, Peru, Singapore, Japan and Sweden.

With the use of highly orchestrated audio-visual compositions, Lock’s current work in Maximum Overdrive presents an immersive sensory experience that takes inspiration from Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 science-fiction novel Lilith’s Brood and audio accompaniment provided in collaboration with Schmidt (composer) and Barczewski (vocals). With the use of animation, Lock’s work illustrates the narrative of a hybrid organic form in an alternative future in which humans coexist with extra-terrestrial beings.
